Zelensky Urges Stronger Sanctions Following Deadly Russian Strike in Kyiv
Ukrainian President calls for intensified international response as toll from the attack rises.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has intensified his call for more severe international sanctions on Russia following a brutal assault that resulted in the deaths of at least 31 people in Kyiv. Among the victims were five children, with the youngest just two years old, and 159 individuals sustained injuries during the Thursday attack. "No matter how much the Kremlin denies their effectiveness, sanctions do work - and they must be strengthened," Zelensky stated as the capital observed a day of mourning, mourning the loss and destruction that ensued from the attack on a residential building and various public facilities.
According to Ukraine's air force, Russia unleashed more than 300 drones and eight cruise missiles in the overnight offensive, marking one of the most significant assaults on Kyiv since the onset of the large-scale invasion by Russia in February 2022. U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the actions taken by Russia, labeling them "disgusting," and announced forthcoming sanctions against Moscow. Trump's commitment includes a new ultimatum for a ceasefire agreement in Ukraine, insisting that Russian President Vladmir Putin must comply in the next 10 to 12 days.
In a session with the UN Security Council, U.S. representative John Kelley emphasized the importance of negotiation for peace between Russia and Ukraine, stating, "It is time to make a deal." Ukrainian officials have reported receiving encouraging signals from the U.S. regarding additional sanctions, which are particularly aimed at Russian oil exports and secondary markets. Ukraine's deputy foreign minister Andrii Sybiha acknowledged Trump's efforts, stressing that maximum pressure must now be exerted on Moscow.
Amidst this turmoil, Germany has pledged to supply Ukraine with two additional U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems in the coming days. Zelensky has highlighted the gravity of the situation, revealing that in July alone, Russia launched over 5,100 glide bombs, 3,800 Shahed drones, and 260 missiles, including 128 ballistic missiles. "Every day matters," he stressed, calling for collective efforts from the U.S., Europe, and other global entities to halt the onslaught.
