Tensions Rise as Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni Clash in Court Over Legal Allegations
The first court hearing between Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni sees intense exchanges between their legal representatives amid allegations and defamation claims.
Lawyers representing actors Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni faced off in a Manhattan federal court on Monday, marking the beginning of a contentious legal battle stemming from allegations related to their film, "It Ends With Us." In December, Lively accused Baldoni of sexual harassment and orchestrating a smear campaign against her, while Baldoni countered with a defamation suit.
Although neither actor was present for the initial hearing, tensions escalated among their legal teams as they accused each other of tarnishing their client's image outside the courtroom. Lively's attorney, Michael Gottlieb, admonished Baldoni's lawyer, Bryan Freedman, for making what he termed “inflammatory comments” about Lively's character. Freedman retorted, claiming that Gottlieb was attempting to impose restrictions on his public statements, asserting that Baldoni was the real victim suffering harm to his reputation.
The court session lasted approximately ninety minutes, during which Judge Lewis Liman stressed the importance of resolving the matter through judicial channels rather than through media disclosures. The judge also invoked standards from the New York Bar Association to deter public statements that might bias future jury members.
As part of the legal back-and-forth, Baldoni's team introduced an updated complaint, which included a meticulous 168-page timeline of events. They also launched a website related to the litigation, which was a topic of contention in court. Lively's legal representatives questioned the origins and funding of the site, while also disputing Baldoni's release of footage from their film that purported to challenge Lively's allegations.
Moreover, Lively's team indicated plans to submit an amended complaint involving additional parties in the case. Notably, Baldoni is pursuing a libel case against the New York Times, alleging that Lively leaked information about her civil rights complaint to them. The newspaper has denied these claims. Judge Liman also indicated that procedural limits would be put in place due to the significant number of high-profile individuals involved and the serious nature of the allegations.
As the preliminary proceedings unfolded, Baldoni’s attorney urged the judge to adhere to the original pre-trial timeline, seeking swift resolution to the legal matter. The judge acquiesced to this request, though minor adjustments were made to the schedule, reminding everyone present that eventually, a jury would render judgment on these allegations.
