Security Breach at Women's Dating App Exposes Sensitive User Data**

A recent cybersecurity incident involving the Tea Dating Advice app has compromised the privacy of thousands of female members, raising concerns about online dating safety and data protection.**

 

A significant security breach at the Tea Dating Advice app, designed specifically for women, has compromised the privacy of its members following an unauthorized access event. Users of the app, which boasts a user base of approximately 1.6 million, are distressed after it was revealed that hackers accessed around 72,000 images and various posts, some provided for verification purposes, despite the firm’s policy of immediate deletion after use.

The incident primarily affected users who registered prior to February 2024. Tea expressed remorse for the breach, emphasizing their swift actions in collaboration with top cyber security experts to safeguard the impacted community. The app has gained traction for its unique approach to women's safety when navigating dating, allowing users to conduct background checks on potential male partners and share experiences regarding their dates, though it has faced criticism for being perceived as anti-men.

Alongside the 72,000 images, the company disclosed that an additional 59,000 images containing user posts, comments, and direct messages from the past two years were also exposed during the breach. Assuring users of their commitment to security, Tea reiterated that the compromised photos “can in no way be linked to posts within Tea,” as they have implemented measures to block screenshots that would allow content to be shared externally.

Founded in November 2022 by Sean Cook, who was motivated by witnessing the struggles faced by women on dating platforms, Tea aims to provide a safer online dating experience. However, similar initiatives have sparked controversies, with some arguing they may infringe on privacy rights and lead to reputational harm. This has led to legal challenges, such as a recent case involving a man contesting defamation due to discussions in online dating groups.
