"Didier Dubreucq, involved in the notorious jewel heist, succumbs to cancer shortly after conviction."
Didier Dubreucq, a 69-year-old man implicated in the infamous robbery of Kim Kardashian's jewelry, has reportedly died a month following his conviction, according to French media outlets. Dubreucq was diagnosed with lung cancer while awaiting trial and had been receiving chemotherapy treatment.
In May, he and seven accomplices were convicted for the brazen heist that occurred in Paris nearly a decade ago, resulting in the theft of millions in jewelry from Kardashian. While on the stand, Dubreucq denied any involvement, claiming it was a case of mistaken identity. "I had nothing to do with this," he declared during his April testimony.
Due to his medical condition, Dubreucq was unable to attend his sentencing and received a seven-year prison sentence, with five years suspended. He did not serve time after the sentencing, as he had already spent two years in pre-trial detention. Other members of the gang, some of whom received sentences up to eight years, also did not return to prison due to time already served. Judge David De Pas acknowledged during the verdict that the health conditions of the defendants made incarceration ethically questionable.
The high-profile trial revealed the traumatic experience Kardashian endured during the robbery, where she was held at gunpoint and feared for her life. Reflecting on the overall ordeal, Kardashian stated that it remained "the most terrifying experience of my life" and had a profound and lasting impact on her and her family.
