Orthodox Christmas Celebrations Illuminate Diverse Traditions Worldwide

As Orthodox Christians mark Christmas, churches around the globe resonate with age-old customs and communal spirit.

From Syria to Russia, observances showcase unique cultural ties while emphasizing shared religious significance.

Orthodox Christians globally have gathered in various capacities to observe Christmas, commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, which falls on January 7 for the majority adhering to the Julian calendar.

This year has been particularly poignant in Syria, where attendees at the Armenian Apostolic Church of Mar Sarkis in Damascus partook in Holy Communion, marking the first festive season since the fall of former President Bashar al-Assad.

In Cairo, the Coptic Orthodox Church, representing the largest Christian community in the Middle East, welcomed worshippers at the Archangel Michael Church, symbolizing resilience and faith.

In the United Arab Emirates, young worshippers lit candles during the Christmas Eve festivities in Sharjah, while in Bethlehem, believers congregated at the Church of the Nativity, historically recognized as the birthplace of Christ, for solemn services.

Ethiopian Christians filled the Bole Medhanialem Church in Addis Ababa, their voices harmonizing in hymns amidst the glow of flickering candles.

Across Russia, millions joined in celebrations as President Vladimir Putin participated in observances at St George's Church, with the streets of Moscow adorned in vibrant holiday decorations.

In Belgrade, Serbia's Prince Philip took part in a traditional ceremony, holding a burning oak branch or badnjak, further deepening the festive atmosphere.

Meanwhile, in the Armenian capital of Yerevan, congregations filled St Gregory the Illuminator Cathedral, while candlelit services lit the way for Georgian Christians in Tbilisi, showcasing the rich tapestry of Orthodox Christmas traditions.
