Resilient Education: Ukraine's Children Learn Amid War's Shadows
Despite ongoing conflict, Ukrainian students are adapting their learning methods, holding classes in underground shelters to cope with the dangers above.
In the heart of war-torn Ukraine, students navigate their disrupted education in unique ways. In Balakliya, close to the frontlines, safety concerns have led teachers to create makeshift classrooms in underground shelters, affectionately dubbed "the beehive" due to the buzz of excited children gathered in a confined space. Holding lessons above ground poses significant risks from Russian airstrikes, which makes underground schooling a necessity.
“Can we go back to our old classroom?” is a recurring question from students anxious to reconnect with their previous learning environment, according to Inna Mandryka, a deputy principal, highlighting a yearning for normalcy in a fractured situation. The Russian assault on Ukraine was meant to cripple the country's cultural and educational fabric, resulting in widespread destruction and chaos.
Currently, approximately 3.7 million children in Ukraine face interruptions in their education, with many falling behind academically due to the war. Experts warn that a lack of interaction with peers could also hinder vital soft skills like communication and conflict resolution, further impacting the children's future.
Since the onset of full-scale hostilities in 2022, creating a stable educational framework has remained one of Ukraine's paramount challenges. Despite these extraordinary circumstances, the resilience of both students and teachers shines through as they adapt and persevere in their quest for learning.
