Sudanese Army Gains Ground: Recaptures Khartoum Airport Amid Ongoing Civil Conflict
As the Sudanese army secures strategic locations in Khartoum, civilian celebrations mask a brutal two-year civil war still in full swing.
The Sudanese army has announced its successful recapture of Khartoum airport from the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking a notable advance in the ongoing civil war that has plagued Sudan since April 2023. General Mohamed Abdel Rahman al-Bilawi confirmed to reporters that troops have fully secured the airport and expressed optimism about clearing out RSF fighters from remaining areas by the day's end. Following the army's reclaiming of the presidential palace earlier this week, civilians have taken to the streets to celebrate these military victories.
Control of the airport is a critical shift, as the RSF had maintained dominance over significant parts of the capital since the onset of conflict. The war has, however, wrought devastation across the nation, with reports indicating hundreds of thousands of casualties and millions displaced from their homes.
In addition to the airport, the army also seized Manshiya Bridge—the last RSF-controlled bridge—along with a military camp located within the paramilitary's southern stronghold. Yet, despite these gains, observers warn that the conflict remains far from resolved. The RSF continues to retain control over the majority of the Darfur region, where air strikes have reportedly led to civilian casualties, including a recent incident involving an air force attack on a market that left dozens dead.
As the civil war rages on, the plight of civilians continues to escalate, raising profound humanitarian concerns within the international community.
