**Sudan Airstrike Devastates Darfur Market, Hundreds Reportedly Killed**

**A catastrophic military airstrike on a market in Darfur has resulted in mass casualties, sparking outrage amid ongoing civil unrest.**

**The assault is described as one of the deadliest attacks in Sudan's ongoing conflict, further complicating the humanitarian crisis.**

A recent airstrike by the Sudanese military on the Tur'rah market in Darfur has reportedly claimed the lives of hundreds of individuals, according to the Emergency Lawyers group, which monitors the country's civil war. The group characterized the bombing as a "horrific massacre," with reports of numerous injuries surfacing in the aftermath. Gruesome footage circulating on social media, some shared by the rival paramilitary group Rapid Support Forces (RSF), depicts severely damaged market stalls and victims with horrific injuries.

Military representatives have dismissed claims of civilian targeting, asserting that the attack focused on legitimate military threats. Both the Sudanese armed forces and RSF have faced allegations of indiscriminate shelling in civilian areas throughout the conflict. The RSF has utilized drones while the military maintains control over warplanes, enabling them to conduct aerial strikes against RSF positions within the region.

The date of the attack remains uncertain, but the Darfur Initiative for Justice and Peace indicated it occurred on Monday, marking it as one of the deadliest bombings since the onset of hostilities. The frequency of civilian casualties from airstrikes and shelling has surged as fighting escalates across the nation. Approximately 12 million people have been displaced since the onset of the conflict, a figure comparable to the entire populations of Belgium or Tunisia.

The United Nations reports a severe famine gripping the nation, with more than half of Sudan experiencing acute food insecurity. While estimates suggest that at least 150,000 lives have been lost due to the violence, the RSF has denied allegations of genocidal acts, including the systematic killing of civilians and ethnic cleansing efforts against non-Arab women. Currently, Sudan is grappling with the most severe humanitarian crisis in the world.

Further reporting by the BBC's Akisa Wandera sheds light on the ongoing struggles faced by the nation's citizens amid the chaos.
