Tesla Faces Sharp Decline in European Sales Amidst Political Backlash
Sales plummet in Germany and the U.K., revealing challenges amid rising competition and political controversies.
Tesla's sales in Germany and the U.K. have hit their lowest levels in over two years, with new vehicle registrations dropping nearly 46% in Germany and an astonishing 62% in the U.K. for the month of April. This decline occurs despite a general rise in demand for electric vehicles across the European market, raising alarms for the U.S.-based automaker. Notably, Tesla faced similar downturns in other European countries, with Sweden reporting an over 80% drop and France seeing a nearly 59% fall in Tesla registrations.
Some industry experts speculate that the delay in launching Tesla's upgraded Model Y could be a contributing factor to the decline. However, others suggest that the sales drop points to a more significant trend of European consumers distancing themselves from U.S. products in reaction to increased tariffs and growing dissatisfaction with CEO Elon Musk's political affiliations.
“Current data from Europe indicates that this trend is not merely a temporary setback linked to vehicle model transitions,” asserted Matthias Schmidt, a respected analyst from Schmidt Automotive Research. “It is clear that Tesla's deeper issues in Europe are connected to public perception of Mr. Musk’s actions.”
