David Mabuza, Former South African Deputy President, Passes Away at 64

A key figure in South Africa’s political landscape, Mr. Mabuza’s career was marked by both achievements and scandals.

David Mabuza, who assisted in elevating Cyril Ramaphosa to the presidency, has died, leaving behind a complex legacy tainted by corruption allegations.

David Mabuza, South Africa's former deputy president, died on Thursday in Mpumalanga Province at the age of 64. His passing was confirmed by President Cyril Ramaphosa, highlighting Mabuza's significant role in South Africa's political framework as well as expressing sorrow over the loss of a leader known for his roots in activism. Mabuza fought a brief battle with an undisclosed illness at a local hospital.

Ramaphosa praised Mabuza’s contributions in shaping South Africa’s relationships within the African continent and the rest of the world. Mabuza was instrumental in bringing Ramaphosa into power; he initially supported Ramaphosa’s opponent during the African National Congress’s (ANC) 2017 election conference but later shifted his allegiance, playing a pivotal role in Ramaphosa’s election as party leader. His actions during this time were credited with helping to steer South Africa away from the tumultuous presidency of Jacob Zuma.

Bheki Mngomezulu, a political science expert, remarked on Mabuza’s adeptness in political maneuvering, stating, “he knew how to play politics.” However, Mabuza’s career was not without controversy, as his time in office became increasingly shadowed by accusations of corruption and graft. South Africa now reflects on a leader whose legacy embodies both political prowess and significant ethical challenges.
