Hungarian Operatives Arrested for Espionage in Ukraine
Ukraine uncovers a spy network allegedly backed by Hungary, raising tensions amid ongoing conflict.
Ukraine’s security service has revealed the capture of two individuals suspected of operating as spies for Hungary, amid rising tensions in the region. The Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) announced that the detained operatives were involved in an intricate espionage operation targeting Ukraine's military defenses, specifically its air defense systems.
This unprecedented revelation marks a significant moment in Ukraine's ongoing conflicts, as the SBU has identified for the first time a Hungarian military intelligence network engaged in activities detrimental to Ukraine's national security. Despite Hungary's membership in both the European Union and NATO, its Prime Minister, Viktor Orban, is known for his relatively pro-Russia stance following the Ukraine invasion.
Reports indicate that the operation focused on gathering intelligence regarding the deployment of Ukrainian air defense units within the western Zakarpattia region, which borders Hungary. The operatives reportedly aimed to gauge the feelings of local residents to anticipate their reactions in case of a potential military advance from Hungary.
The individuals in custody, one male and one female—both former Ukrainian military personnel—were apprehended at their residences, with authorities seizing cell phones and other materials that pointed to their activities as spies. They are facing severe charges, including treason, which could result in life imprisonment if convicted. Hungary has yet to comment on the allegations made by the SBU.
