Giant Schnauzer Monty Triumphs at Westminster Dog Show
Monty, a five-year-old giant schnauzer, claims the coveted Best in Show title at the prestigious Westminster Kennel Club dog show.
A remarkable achievement at the 149th Westminster Kennel Club dog show saw Monty the giant schnauzer crowned Best in Show, marking a turning point for his breed. After three consecutive top-three finishes, Monty finally claimed the winning title coveted by dog enthusiasts across the nation. Owner Katie Bernardin celebrated the win, exclaiming, "The puppy did the damn thing!" Monty's victory is notable as he represents the Working Group, achieving the group's first win since 2004, following two previous years of dominance but without securing the grand prize.
The historic dog show, held annually at New York City's Madison Square Garden, is the second-longest-running sporting event in the country, surpassed only by the Kentucky Derby. Competing against over 2,500 dogs from various breeds, Monty showcased his impressive qualities during the three-day competition. The judging process involves a close examination of adherence to breed standards, physical characteristics, and overall performance.
This year, Paula Nykiel, a veteran dog breeder and judge, recognized Monty's exceptional traits, leading him to stand out among the competitors. The runner-up, a nine-year-old whippet named Bourbon, also had a compelling story, having returned from retirement to claim the Reserve Best title for a remarkable third time. Other finalists included Comet the shih tzu, Mercedes the German shepherd, and Neal the bichon frise. In contrast, predictions suggest that a female miniature poodle will take next year’s title, but Monty’s victory this year is one for the history books in dog show lore.
