Russian Mother and Daughters Found Living in Cave in India: A Story of Survival or Distress?
Authorities investigate the peculiar case of Nina Kutina and her children after their cave discovery reveals more questions than answers.
Police in Karnataka, India, are unraveling the enigmatic circumstances surrounding Nina Kutina, a Russian mother, and her two young daughters, who were discovered living in a cave near Ramteertha hills on July 9. The 40-year-old woman and her daughters, ages six and five, have been placed in a detention center due to lacking valid residency documents in India.
Kutinane expresses her contentment with her cave lifestyle, stating in video interviews that "nature gives good health." However, ambiguity lingers regarding their presence in the forest, notorious for its wildlife dangers, including snakes. The cave was accidentally stumbled upon by officers patrolling the area, known for its popularity among tourists but also its risky landscape. When police approached the vibrant cloths hung outside, a curious blonde girl emerged, leading them to discover the family inside.
The police have reported that the living conditions inside the cave were minimal, consisting only of some clothes and meager supplies, yet Kutina maintained they enjoyed a fulfilling life amid nature. She seemed to resist concerns for her children's safety, claiming that "animals and snakes are our friends," and she had previously lived similarly in Goa.
Born in Russia, Kutina revealed she hadn't resided there in 15 years and had traveled through numerous countries, sharing her grief over the death of her eldest son in a tragic accident. Investigations into her family situation have also brought to light issues regarding the children’s father, Israeli businessman Dror Goldstein, who is advocating for joint custody as she and her daughters face deportation.
Though she claims to have lived in caves for an extended period, circumstances of her return to India remain unclear, with reports indicating her visa had expired. Kutina’s future hangs in uncertainty, as officials maintain communication with the Russian consulate about her repatriation but she voices dissatisfaction with her treatment in the detention center, feeling confined and expressing a desire to return to nature with her children.
