Geert Wilders Exits Dutch Coalition, Ignites New Political Crisis
The far-right leader's decision to pull out threatens the stability of the current government amid mounting immigration tensions.
Geert Wilders, the head of the Party for Freedom (PVV), announced on Tuesday that he would withdraw his ministers from the governing coalition of four parties, citing inadequate progress on immigration reforms. This decision plunges the Netherlands into political instability, possibly leading to a government collapse and new elections shortly after the coalition's formation.
In a post on X, Wilders expressed his frustration with his coalition partners’ refusal to endorse a new set of proposals aimed at rapidly reducing immigration rates, stating simply, “No signature for our migration plans.” His party, known for its stringent stance on immigration—including proposals to ban the Quran and halt asylum applications—emerged as the largest party following the November 2023 elections, reshaping the political landscape.
Wilders formed a coalition with the People’s Party for Freedom and Democracy (VVD), the populist Farmer Citizen Movement (BBB), and the centrist New Social Contract (NSC) after extensive negotiations lasting nearly seven months. Combined, these four parties hold a slim majority with 88 of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives.
Politicians and analysts are now bracing for the repercussions of this decision, which threatens to unravel what has been described as a fragile alliance, and could signal a significant shift in Dutch politics.
