Colombian police have apprehended Élder José Arteaga Hernandez, identified as the alleged orchestrator of the assassination attempt on Miguel Uribe, a conservative senator and presidential candidate. Uribe was shot twice in the head during a campaign rally in Bogotá on June 7, leaving him in critical condition. The motives surrounding the violent act remain unknown.

Arteaga was arrested after reports linked him to the crime, alleging he encouraged a 15-year-old to execute the attack. Four accomplices had already been arrested, including the young gunman, who has since pleaded not guilty. Colombian police chief Carlos Fernando Triana indicated that Arteaga has a significant criminal history and is charged with "aggravated attempted homicide" and "utilizing minors for crime." He reportedly coordinated the assault and supplied the firearm.

Uribe, who has been serving as a senator since 2022, is a prominent figure in a politically influential family tied to Colombia's Liberal Party. His candidacy for the 2026 presidential election was announced last October. The attack has incited widespread outcry across the nation, leading to silent protests that gathered tens of thousands of demonstrators calling for an end to violence against political figures.
