Federal Charges Stacked Against Suspect in Minnesota Lawmaker Shootings
Vance Boelter faces serious federal charges, including stalking and murder, in connection to the fatal shooting of Minnesota lawmakers.
The suspect charged with the fatal shooting of Minnesota lawmaker Melissa Hortman and her spouse has been formally indicted on multiple federal charges, according to the state's attorney general. Vance Boelter, 57, faces six serious charges, including murder and stalking, which carry potential sentences that could include life imprisonment or the death penalty.
Boelter was apprehended after a two-day manhunt on June 16, following the alleged killings of Hortman and her husband Mark. He is currently being held in custody in Minnesota, with additional state charges pending. As of now, he has not filed a plea.
Prosecutors allege that Boelter stalked and fired at two other lawmakers—Senator John Hoffman and his wife Yvette—during a separate incident, indicating a broader plan that was thwarted by law enforcement. Acting US Attorney Joseph H. Thompson highlighted the severity of Boelter's actions, referring to the shootings as a "night of terror" for Minnesota that introduced targeted political violence to the state.
In court documents, it was revealed that Boelter had conducted background research on his intended victims prior to the attacks on June 14. Disguised as a police officer, he reportedly approached the Hoffman's residence, shooting Senator Hoffman multiple times before also attacking his wife. After that, he turned his attention to the Hortmans, eventually resulting in their deaths.
After fleeing the scene, Boelter was arrested near his family home, located in a rural area west of Minneapolis. He allegedly expressed intentions to target US Senators Amy Klobuchar and Tina Smith, a claim that both prosecutors and Governor Tim Walz have vehemently denied as false. The unfolding of this case has raised pressing concerns about political violence and safety in the realm of public service.
