Severe floods in Mexico have resulted in at least 27 confirmed deaths and several missing persons after torrential rainfall led to landslides and extensive property damage. Areas like Hidalgo have been among the hardest hit, with reports indicating that 16 fatalities have occurred there alone.
The flooding has inflicted massive damage, destroying homes, vehicles, and disrupting infrastructure, as fast-moving waters inundated streets and swept away anything in their path. Thousands of houses have been affected, and many highways are blocked due to debris with electricity being cut off in some regions.
In response to the crisis, President Claudia Sheinbaum announced the deployment of 5,400 personnel to assist affected communities, clear roads, and deliver aid. She emphasized the government’s commitment to restoring services and supporting the people impacted by this disaster.
Naval troops also joined the rescue efforts, actively participating in evacuations and the cleanup process, highlighting the scale of the emergency response. As state leaders report that Puebla was also severely hit, the government is now faced with the serious challenge of recovery and support for approximately 80,000 affected individuals.
Many local residents have expressed shock at the intensity of the flooding. Business owners like Jose Cervantes described their losses, stating that the floodwaters reached as high as one and a half meters, devastating their establishments.
