In a worrying development in Latvia, the Defense Intelligence and Security Service has issued a public advisory urging citizens to remain vigilant against potential espionage linked to Russia. The warning stems from concerns regarding Russian operatives and possible saboteurs that could infiltrate the country during heights of geopolitical tension, primarily due to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War.

The assessment raised various indicators that could signify espionage, though many descriptions overlap suspiciously with the characteristics of regular tourists or hikers. Elements like an athletic, unkempt backpacker equipped with survival gear may well fit the profile of an avid outdoor enthusiast, yet they could simultaneously represent a potential threat.

Latvian officials have expressed their views on what to look for in suspected spies: individuals showing poor hygiene, sporting military-style haircuts, or exhibiting unusual interest in local political opinions and critical infrastructure. They are advising the public to be on the lookout for people carrying foreign currency or appearing rudimentary in their grasp of the local language, as these could also be telltale signs of espionage activity.

Moreover, those with navigation equipment who appear lost or are taking notes or photographs of sensitive locations could also be operating under nefarious objectives. While Latvia remains consolidated within NATO, the country’s long history of tensions with Russia continues to drive its citizens to exercise caution against potential threats masked as innocent hikers or distributors of humanitarian aid, including impersonators of international organizations.
