Investigation Launched into Florida Marine Park Amid Animal Welfare Allegations
Law enforcement raided Gulf World Marine Park following the deaths of multiple dolphins and concerns over animal conditions.
Law enforcement agencies, including the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), have taken significant action against the Gulf World Marine Park, located in Panama City Beach, following serious allegations of animal welfare violations. Reports indicate that four dolphins have died at the facility in the past year, with three reported fatalities occurring as recently as October.
The investigation is partly fueled by disturbing drone footage released by animal rights activists, which appears to show dolphins swimming in visibly unclean, murky water. Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier has condemned any forms of animal abuse, affirming a commitment to uphold the welfare of wildlife within the state. The Dolphin Company, which operates the park, has yet to respond to requests for comment concerning the claims.
At Uthmeier's request, a search warrant was executed to inspect the park, especially after reports that staff had allegedly obstructed FWC officials from accessing the animals. One of the dolphins reportedly died after a performance incident involving a head injury while performing tricks, drawing further scrutiny to the park's practices.
The Dolphin Company’s website lists a variety of species cared for at the park, ranging from bottlenose dolphins to sea lions and various bird and reptile species. Animal welfare organization UrgentSeas has expressed profound concern about the well-being of the animals and has been actively documenting the park's alleged distressing conditions.
Phil Demers, the director of UrgentSeas, emphasized the urgency of the situation, stating, “The conditions are deteriorating, and these animals must be rescued from their current plight.” The ongoing investigation aims to ensure that proper care is provided to the marine life within the park and hold any responsible parties accountable for neglect.
