In a heart-stopping incident on Sunday afternoon, a father made a daring leap off the fourth deck of a 14-deck Disney Cruise ship to save his daughter who had fallen overboard. Eyewitness accounts circulated on social media, showing fellow passengers cheering when both were successfully pulled from the ocean by a rescue boat after staying afloat for around ten minutes.
Eyewitnesses reported that the girl fell while her father was taking her picture near a railing. A "man overboard" alert was swiftly broadcast onboard as crew members rushed to effectuate a rescue operation. Passenger Laura Amador described the frantic scene, saying, "The ship was moving quickly, so quickly, it’s crazy how quickly the people became tiny dots in the sea, and then you lost sight of them."
The Disney Dream, which has a capacity of 4,000 passengers, was en route back to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, following a four-day cruise around the Bahamas. Disney Cruise Line confirmed the incident, stating, “The Crew aboard the Disney Dream swiftly rescued two guests from the water.” They commended their crew members for their exceptional skills and prompt actions that contributed to the safe return of both guests to the ship within mere minutes.
Aboard the cruise, passenger Gar Frantz vividly recounted the shocking moment, stating, "You could see two little things... it was crazy, it was horrific," referring to the father and daughter as they struggled in the waves. The incident unfolded at the end of the cruise, and despite its alarming nature, the ship returned to port in Florida as scheduled. Falls overboard are quite rare on cruise ships, and surprisingly, only a small percentage of such incidents result in successful rescues, as indicated by a report from the Cruise Lines International Association in 2019, which noted that 25 passengers fell overboard that year, with only nine safely rescued.
