Tragedy Strikes Bali: Ferry Sinks with Lives in Jeopardy
At least four confirmed dead as rescue efforts continue for missing passengers after ferry incident.
At least four individuals have lost their lives, with dozens still unaccounted for, following the tragic sinking of a ferry off the coast of Bali, Indonesia, authorities have reported. The vessel was transporting 53 passengers along with 12 crew members when it went down at around 23:20 local time (15:35 GMT) on Wednesday during its route from Banyuwangi on Java's eastern coast toward Bali.
Rescue teams have managed to locate four passengers in a lifeboat during the early hours of Thursday, and efforts to find additional survivors are ongoing. Images shared by the Antara news agency depict ambulances on the scene, alongside anxious families gathered for updates on their loved ones as the search operations unfold.
Investigators are currently examining the circumstances that led to the ferry disaster. According to the ferry operator, mechanical problems had been reported shortly before the craft sank. The route is frequently utilized by locals traveling between Bali and Java. The four survivors who were rescued are said to be residents of Banyuwangi, as confirmed by the Surabaya search and rescue team.
Indonesia, with its vast network of approximately 17,000 islands, has a history of maritime accidents, compounded by inconsistent enforcement of safety regulations. Just last March, an Australian woman tragically lost her life when a different boat capsized off Bali involving 16 passengers.
