Tragic Military Jet Crash in Dhaka Claims Lives and Injures Many
The Bangladesh Air Force suffers a devastating blow as a training jet crashes into a school, leading to significant casualties, particularly among children.
A tragic accident unfolded yesterday in Dhaka, Bangladesh, when a Bangladesh Air Force training jet crashed into Milestone School and College, resulting in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and injuring 171 more. The military has indicated that the crash was due to a mechanical failure.
The incident occurred in an area just north of Dhaka’s international airport and a military airbase, during school hours when students from elementary to high school were present. A spokesperson for the interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, confirmed that the majority of the injured were children, with 25 reported to be in critical condition.
Eyewitness accounts detail the chaos that ensued. The aircraft reportedly struck the second floor of the school, primarily inhabited by third and fourth graders. Initial reports suggest that the pilot, who also lost his life in the crash, attempted to divert the aircraft to a less populated area to mitigate casualties.
One nearby high school student, Emon Islam, recounted the scene, stating, “I saw the windows of the aircraft shattered, and it was burning up in flames, with black smoke rising into the sky.”
Authorities are continuing search and rescue operations at the site as the nation mourns this tragic event.
