Disney Under Federal Investigation for Diversity Practices
The FCC is scrutinizing Disney's diversity and inclusion strategies amid rising regulatory pressure.
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has officially launched an investigation into The Walt Disney Company regarding its diversity and inclusion (DEI) policies, an announcement that has stirred considerable debate within the media landscape. The FCC's chairman, Brendan Carr, communicated with Disney and its news unit, ABC News, in a letter dated Friday, citing specific concerns over compliance with government regulations concerning diversity promotion.
In his correspondence, Carr emphasized the investigation's focus on ensuring Disney is not promoting any discriminatory practices, whether overt or covert. A representative from Disney has acknowledged the receipt of the letter and expressed the company’s willingness to comply and engage with the investigation. "We look forward to answering the commission's questions," said the spokesperson.
This inquiry arises amid a targeted crackdown by the Trump administration on DEI practices, which have faced criticism and regulatory challenges. However, Disney's issues are not limited to domestic scrutiny; information was released that French companies holding US government contracts were also urged to refrain from DEI programs, under the directives of an executive order from Trump.
In the letter addressed to Disney's CEO, Robert Iger, Carr mentioned the need for transparency regarding Disney's initiatives and their alignment with the FCC's equal employment opportunity requirements. He raised questions regarding representation in character development and other DEI efforts, stating, "I want to ensure that Disney and ABC have not been violating FCC equal employment opportunity regulations by promoting invidious forms of DEI discrimination."
Disney has historically found itself entangled in political controversies, including a recent $15 million settlement in a defamation claim from Donald Trump after misleading statements from an ABC anchor. Additionally, tensions have arisen with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, following Disney's outspoken opposition to the state's "Don't Say Gay" law.
As regulatory bodies intensify their focus on DEI across various sectors, Disney's ongoing changes to its DEI strategies suggest that the debate over diversity in media will continue to unfold in complex and unpredictable ways.
