Nick and Suzie Trivisonno, a couple from Charlotte, North Carolina, have always felt a deep connection to Notre-Dame Cathedral. Like many who travel to Paris, they often visit the iconic site to pray and reflect. After witnessing the destruction of the beloved cathedral during the catastrophic fire in April 2019, the couple felt compelled to take action.
On December 7, 2024, the Trivisonnos were among the many who gathered to celebrate the reopening of the historic cathedral, a monumental achievement resulting from the dedicated efforts of approximately 2,000 workers who poured their skills into restoring what President Emmanuel Macron referred to as “the most beautiful construction site of the century.” The restoration project, funded by about $900 million in international donations, reflects the commitment of people worldwide to revive a landmark that represents centuries of European history and culture.
Fueled by emotion, the Trivisonnos recalled watching in horror as a live video feed showed the cathedral engulfed in flames. Their donation was a small part of a much larger movement uniting people across borders, driven by a shared love for France and its cultural heritage.
The couple reveled in the atmosphere of Paris on the eve of the reopening, enjoying a lavish dinner among other donors at the renowned Tour d’Argent. As they sipped their coffee and sampled croissants at the Hotel Regina Louvre, they reminiscenced about that unforgettable night, with the resplendent view of Notre-Dame framed by the restaurant’s large windows.
Although the cathedral still bears scaffolding, the reopening ceremony represented a profound symbol of hope and resilience.
