**UAE faces serious allegations regarding military support for Sudanese paramilitary forces amidst ongoing civil war.**
Sudan has officially lodged a complaint against the United Arab Emirates (UAE) at the International Court of Justice (ICJ), asserting that the UAE has been instrumental in supporting Sudan's paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) during the ongoing civil conflict. Khartoum maintains that the UAE's actions have amounted to "complicity in the genocide" of the Masalit community located in West Darfur, highlighting a range of military, financial, and political support for the RSF.
In a swift response, the UAE vehemently denied all allegations, branding the lawsuit as a "cynical publicity stunt," and announced its intention to push for an immediate dismissal of the case. The civil war that erupted in April 2023 has seen both the RSF and the Sudanese armed forces accused of perpetrating various atrocities.
According to a report by news agency AFP, Sudan's legal complaint to the ICJ asserts: "The United Arab Emirates fuels the rebellion and supports the militia that has committed the crime of genocide in West Darfur," and demands that the UAE provide full reparations for the harm inflicted due to its "internationally wrongful acts," including compensating the victims affected by the conflict.
An unnamed official from the UAE remarked that "the allegations presented by the SAF representative at the ICJ lack any legal or factual basis" and seem to be yet another distraction from the tragedy of the ongoing civil war. UN experts, who have been monitoring the arms embargo on Darfur, previously identified claims alleging that the UAE has been smuggling weapons to the RSF via Chad as credible.
While the ICJ's advisory opinions do not hold legal binding power, they are considered to carry substantial political implications. The nearly two-year-long conflict has ravaged Sudan, with estimates indicating tens of thousands of individuals killed and more than 12 million people displaced, propelling what has become one of the most severe humanitarian crises worldwide.
Recent reports highlighted escalating violence, including a distressing incident earlier this week where heavy shelling targeted a camp for displaced individuals in North Darfur, resulting in numerous casualties. A local official reported that a busy market in the Abu Shouk camp, situated near el-Fasher, came under fire for approximately two hours on Tuesday evening.
