A Italian master painting stolen by the Nazis from a Jewish art dealer in Amsterdam has been spotted on the website of an estate agent selling a house in Argentina, more than 80 years after it was taken.
The artwork, entitled Portrait of a Lady by Giuseppe Ghislandi, was discovered hanging above a sofa in a property near Buenos Aires once owned by a senior Nazi official who moved to South America after World War II.
According to Dutch newspaper AD, the painting features on a database of lost wartime art and was brought to light when the house was put up for sale by the official's daughter.
This painting adds to the hundreds of artworks looted from art dealer Jacques Goudstikker, recognized for aiding other Jewish families during the war.
Following investigations, wartime documents revealed the painting’s last known owner was Friedrich Kadgien, an SS officer who fled post-war Europe.
The estate's lawyers expressed their commitment to reclaim the painting as efforts continue to restore Goudstikker's legacy and return all looted artworks to their rightful heirs.
