**South African Government Faces Crisis Amid Police Minister Corruption Allegations**

President Cyril Ramaphosa unveils inquiry into police misconduct as coalition tensions rise.

The South African government grapples with an unfolding scandal as President Ramaphosa suspends a key police minister amid corruption allegations.

In a decisive move to address growing unrest within his coalition government, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced on Sunday the suspension of police minister Senzo Mchunu, accompanied by the establishment of a commission to probe serious allegations against him. The crisis arose following claims made by Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, the chief police officer in KwaZulu-Natal, suggesting that Mchunu actively shielded associates involved in a notorious criminal syndicate by disbanding a police unit tasked with investigating political murders.

Despite Mchunu’s denials of the charges, President Ramaphosa's quick action underscores the mounting pressure on his administration amidst a backdrop of political instability. The inquiry aims to assess the potential infiltration of law enforcement and judicial institutions by criminal networks and whether officials within the justice system have facilitated or benefited from these illegal activities.

Ramaphosa stated, “We are reaffirming our dedication to the rule of law, transparency, and accountability,” adding that the inquiry aligns with efforts to foster a safer South Africa. As public discontent grows, particularly from the Democratic Alliance, the coalition faces one of its most significant tests to date in maintaining unity and governance amid these alarming developments.
