Tragic Assault on Worshippers in DR Congo Linked to Islamic State
Devastating church attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo highlights ongoing violence by the Allied Democratic Forces, raising concerns over regional stability.
Dozens of worshippers were killed in a brutal assault attributed to an Islamic State affiliate in north-eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, according to local officials. Approximately 20 victims were attending a night vigil at a church in Komanda when they came under attack from members of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF). In addition to the fatalities, the assailants looted and torched nearby shops and businesses.
Originating in Uganda during the 1990s, the ADF has since relocated to DR Congo, where it targets civilians across various religious backgrounds and has ties to the Islamic State's Central African Province, which includes affiliates in Mozambique. Recent investigative findings suggest that nearly 90% of Islamic State's activities now occur through its African affiliates.
Dieudonne Duranthabo, a local civil society leader, informed the Associated Press that the death toll could increase as search efforts continue. "More than 21 people were shot dead inside and outside the church, and we have recorded at least three charred bodies along with several homes set ablaze," he said. Father Aime Lokana Dhego, a local priest, reported at least 31 casualties linked to the Eucharistic Crusade movement and noted that several young individuals had been abducted, with no information on their whereabouts. While the UN-backed Radio Okapi reported a death toll of 43, a military spokesperson confirmed only ten fatalities.
In response to the persistent threat from the ADF, DR Congo invited Ugandan military forces to assist in combating the group in 2021, yet attacks remain frequent. The region of Ituri province, where Komanda is situated, is rich in minerals and has been the subject of conflict involving multiple armed factions for many years.
