A substantial fire broke out in an eight-story commercial building located in Seongnam, south of Seoul, on Friday afternoon, prompting hundreds of occupants to evacuate. Fire officials received alerts of the blaze at approximately 4:40 p.m. and responded swiftly, arriving on the scene within an hour. Reports indicated around 300 people were inside the structure during the incident.
Rescue efforts were concentrated on the building's upper levels, where numerous individuals were seen stranded on the roof awaiting assistance. Fire crews successfully rescued 240 people, while an additional 70 managed to escape independently. Fortunately, there have been no fatalities reported; however, around 30 individuals were taken to hospitals with minor injuries related to smoke inhalation.
Visuals broadcasted by local news outlets displayed flames engulfing the lower floors of the building, with thick black smoke billowing from the windows. Fire officials indicated that the blaze originated on the first floor, but the precise cause remains under investigation. Notably, the commercial complex features five underground levels.
