Ed Sheeran's attempt to busk in Bengaluru was cut short by police intervention due to permit issues.
British pop sensation Ed Sheeran was unexpectedly interrupted by local police while attempting to busk in Bengaluru on Sunday, which has sparked a discussion about the city’s regulations on street performances. A video capturing the moment a police officer unplugged Sheeran's microphone in the bustling Church Street area quickly gained traction on social media.
Authorities clarified their actions to ANI, stating that Sheeran's request for street performance was denied in an effort to prevent traffic congestion. However, Sheeran defended himself via Instagram, asserting, “we had permission to busk, by the way. Hence, us playing in that exact spot was planned out before. It wasn't just us randomly turning up. All good though. See you at the show tonight."
This incident occurred just hours before his highly anticipated concert as part of the Mathematics Tour at NICE Grounds. Many fans took to social media to express their dissatisfaction with the police's actions, with one user commenting humorously on the prevalent bureaucracy in India, stating: "We live in an uncleocracy. And there's nothing uncles love more than to stop young people from having fun."
Local politician PC Mohan of the ruling BJP party remarked, “even global stars must follow local rules - no permit, no performance!” highlighting the necessity of adhering to regulations regardless of an artist’s fame.
Sheeran's tour marks his second visit to India in consecutive years, having performed previously in Pune, Hyderabad, and Chennai. The artist also made headlines for singing popular Telugu songs live with local singer Shilpa Rao and collaborating with musician Megha Rawoot.
As the demand for live music continues to rise in India, Sheeran’s extensive tour reflects the burgeoning “concert economy.” According to a report from Bank of Baroda, the live music market is projected to be worth between $700 million and $900 million, indicating the country’s growing investment in entertainment events, coinciding with recent concerts by international acts like Dua Lipa and Coldplay.
