Sole Survivor's Harrowing Escape: Air India Crash Survivor Shares His Story
In an emotional recount, British national Vishwashkumar Ramesh reveals how he survived the devastating Air India plane crash that took many lives.
The British man who survived the recent Air India plane crash described his miraculous escape from the wreckage after the aircraft went down in Ahmedabad. Vishwashkumar Ramesh, 40, was the only survivor among the passengers and crew when the Boeing 787 crashed shortly after takeoff. Speaking with Indian state media DD News from his hospital bed, Ramesh recounted his desperate attempt to escape through an opening in the fuselage.
Seated in 11A, Mr. Ramesh noted that moments after the flight took off, the airplane began experiencing problems with flickering lights. "It felt like we were stuck in the air, and suddenly we crashed into a building," he recalled, describing a chaotic scene as the aircraft collided with a structure housing medical personnel at Byramjee Jeejeebhoy Medical College.
Ramesh's section of the plane serendipitously landed away from the impacted area, providing a narrow escape route when the door broke open. "I crawled out of there and managed to escape," he stated, expressing disbelief at having survived. Tragically, he witnessed the deaths of fellow passengers and crew members, stating, “I saw people dying in front of my eyes.”
Officials are still investigating the cause of the crash, with one black box already recovered from the scene. Eyewitness video depicted Ramesh emerging from the wreckage, disoriented yet alive amidst the chaos. He mentioned being treated for multiple injuries but is reportedly now out of danger.
The incident caught the attention of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who visited the crash site and met injured survivors, including Ramesh. The British Foreign Office is in contact with Mr. Ramesh and his family, offering consular support as they navigate this tragic event. Ramesh's brother was also on the flight, and his family is working to find additional support to reach India.
Vishwashkumar Ramesh, two decades a resident of the UK after moving from India, is a businessman and father of a young child, cherishing his miraculous survival during this heartbreaking event.
