Despite initial skepticism about the nature of eye ailments affecting young children, Ms. Fakira's concerns were validated when she traveled to Quelimane for a specialized examination. Dr. da Gama swiftly diagnosed the cataract and assured Ms. Fakira that a minor surgical procedure could restore Sumaya’s sight.

With only three pediatric ophthalmologists serving a population of 30 million, access to eye care is a pressing issue.
