Donatella Versace Announces Departure as Creative Director After Three Decades

Versace's pioneering leader sets the stage for new artistic direction amidst frequent transitions in the luxury fashion landscape.

The iconic designer will pass the torch to Dario Vitale, while ensuring her continued influence within the brand and its philanthropic commitments.

In a significant shift within the fashion industry, Donatella Versace has confirmed her departure from the role of creative director at Versace after an impressive tenure exceeding 30 years. Having stepped into the position in 1997, following the tragic passing of her brother Gianni, she has been at the forefront of the brand's artistic evolution, shaping it into a powerhouse of luxury fashion.

As reported, Dario Vitale, a former design director for Miu Miu, has been appointed to fill her prestigious role, while Donatella will transition into a new position as a brand ambassador, albeit still influencing Versace's philanthropic efforts. This announcement correlates with ongoing rumors that the Prada Group may acquire the fashion house from Capri Holdings, which purchased Versace for €2 billion in 2018.

In their official statement, Capri Holdings expressed gratitude to Donatella for her monumental contributions to the brand as well as her integral role in its global prominence, emphasizing that the new leadership structure is part of a considered succession plan. Donatella expressed on social media her honor in continuing her brother's legacy, stating, "Versace is in my DNA and always in my heart," and echoed her commitment to nurturing future design talent.

Her designs have adorned some of the most celebrated figures in the entertainment world, including figures like Madonna and Beyoncé. Notably, her creation of the remarkable green jungle dress worn by Jennifer Lopez in 2000 has become iconic in fashion history.

Founded by Donatella, her brothers Santo and Gianni in Milan in 1978, Versace has evolved into a critical component of Capri Holdings, expected to contribute over 20% towards the corporation's projected €5.2 billion revenue for 2024.
