Yuri Grigorovich, Iconic Russian Ballet Choreographer, Dies at 98

Beloved figure in the world of ballet leaves behind a legacy of innovative choreography.

Yuri Grigorovich, the renowned Russian ballet choreographer who transformed Soviet ballet, has passed away at the age of 98, leaving a lasting impact on the art form and its history.

Acclaimed Russian ballet choreographer Yuri Grigorovich has died at the age of 98, marking the end of an era in Soviet ballet. Regarded as one of the foremost choreographers of the 20th century, Grigorovich helmed the Bolshoi Ballet as artistic director from 1964 to 1995, where his formidable leadership style is well remembered.

His groundbreaking works, including "Romeo and Juliet," "Ivan the Terrible," and "Stone Flower," redefined the landscape of Soviet ballet. Notably, he emphasized the importance of male dancers in his productions, crafting roles that showcased exceptional physicality and artistry.

Born in 1927, Grigorovich was shaped by the rich traditions of classical ballet, with early influences stemming from his uncle Georgy Rozai, a student of the iconic Vaslav Nijinsky. He initially danced as a soloist with the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad before making the transition to choreography.

His tenure at the Bolshoi was not without controversy; in 1995, his departure incited the first-ever dancers' strike in the theater's long history, when an unexpected announcement of a cancellation stunned the audience.

"Stone Flower," considered his masterpiece, is notable for its incorporation of folk tales, accompanied by Sergei Prokofiev's evocative score. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Grigorovich established a new ballet company in Krasnodar but returned to the Bolshoi as a choreographer and ballet master in 2008.

Throughout his career, Grigorovich earned many distinctions, including the title of People's Artist of the USSR and the esteemed Hero of Socialist Labour. He was deeply affected by the loss of his wife, celebrated ballerina Natalia Bessmertnova, who passed away in 2008.

Interestingly, the news of Grigorovich's passing coincided with that of his longtime collaborator, dancer Yuri Vladimirov, who died at age 83. Valery Gergiev, the head of the Bolshoi and Mariinsky theatres, reflected on Grigorovich’s legacy, calling him "a legendary figure who will continue to command respect and admiration for decades to come."
