In brief

Nina Kutina, a 40-year-old Russian woman, has been discovered living in a cave in Karnataka, India, for a spiritual retreat with her children. Despite her wishes to remain, officials are considering deportation due to her visa status.

In a remarkable tale of spiritual seeking, Indian police discovered Nina Kutina, a 40-year-old Russian woman, and her two daughters living in a cave in Karnataka State last week. The encounter occurred on July 9 during a patrol aimed at ensuring safety for tourists in the region, known for its treacherous landslides.Inspector Sridhar S.R. stumbled upon the cave after noticing a statue of a Hindu deity amid dense foliage. Upon investigation, he found the trio residing in the cave under makeshift curtains of red saris. The police were soon drawn into an astonishing saga that revealed Kutina's profound devotion to nature and spirituality.Kutina had reportedly been living in and out of the cave for nine years, often choosing it as a retreat alongside her children, aged 4 and 6. She engaged in yoga, meditation, and prepared meals on a wood-fired stove nestled within the cave's confines. The walls adorned with images of Hindu deities served as a testament to her spiritual journey.Despite initial negotiations to convince her to leave amid the danger posed by the region's wilderness, including heavy rains and venomous snakes, Kutina expressed a steadfast commitment to her lifestyle. She indicated that she preferred worshiping in the forest and mingling with nature rather than returning to a conventional living arrangement. However, the state’s officials have indicated that her prolonged stay in India without appropriate visa conditions could lead to her deportation. The authorities are now facing the dilemma of reconciling her chosen path of spirituality against immigration laws, paving the way for what could be a challenging resolution.
