In brief

Tropical Storm Trami has made landfall in Vietnam just days after causing significant destruction in the Philippines, leaving behind a trail of casualties and concerns.

Tropical Storm Trami made its entrance into Vietnam on Sunday, arriving near the coastal city of Danang. This storm is a successor to a devastating week in the Philippines, where the storm resulted in at least 80 fatalities and 66 injuries. The Philippine Office of Civil Defense had reported a continued search for 34 missing individuals as heavy rainfall led to severe flooding across multiple provinces.Reaching land with wind speeds clocking in at 55 miles per hour, Trami posed significant risks of additional flooding and landslides as it advanced inland. The Vietnamese meteorological agency predicted up to 16 inches of rain in certain areas south of Danang, raising alarms for potential flash floods. In anticipation of the storm, four major airports in central Vietnam had suspended operations, including the Danang International Airport. However, by Sunday, these airports were reopened for flights. In the Philippines, Trami's effects were felt widely; over half a million people were displaced, while nearly 28,000 houses suffered damage. The storm wreaked havoc on power infrastructures, disrupting services in over 150 municipalities, and hindering the efforts of relief workers to reach the most impacted areas. As Trami's winds brushed the shores, another tempest, Tropical Storm Kong-rey, was inching near the Philippines with similar wind strengths. Forecasts anticipated Kong-rey would approach the populous Luzon island, continuing its course towards the southern regions of Japan. This series of storms marks a significant moment in weather discussions, following the recent memory of Typhoon Yagi, which previously devastated parts of China and the Philippines before also making landfall in Vietnam. The human toll from these storms serves as a pressing reminder of the ongoing battle against extreme weather impacts throughout the region.
