In brief
Benjamin Netanyahu's upcoming surgery coincides with ongoing military operations and his corruption trial, reflecting a tumultuous period for Israel.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is set to undergo prostate removal surgery this Sunday, as reported on Saturday by his office. The 75-year-old leader was diagnosed with a urinary tract infection, related to a benign enlargement of the prostate, following an examination at Hadassah Hospital. He has been receiving antibiotic treatment for the infection over the past few days. This latest health challenge comes on the heels of several other medical issues the prime minister faced recently. In March, Netanyahu underwent hernia surgery while the Israeli government faced intense international scrutiny for its approach to the ongoing conflict in Gaza. In 2023, he was hospitalized after a fainting episode, which led to doctors implanting a pacemaker due to detected heart irregularities. A previous hernia operation took place in 2013.The timing of Netanyahu's surgery is particularly acute, coinciding with Israel's aggressive military actions in response to a series of missile attacks by the Iranian-backed Houthi group in Yemen. Following extensive airstrikes, including an attack on Sana's international airport, the Houthis have continued to retaliate with rocket fire aimed at Israel.Since the Hamas-led assault on October 7, 2023, Israel has found itself engaged in multi-front conflicts, battling Hamas in Gaza, Hezbollah in Lebanon, and conducting operations against targets in Syria, while also skirmishing with Iran.Amid this backdrop of escalating violence, Netanyahu is concurrently navigating his high-profile corruption trial, where he is accused of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust. The allegations have provoked deep divisions among Israeli citizens and instigated years of political instability within the nation.
