In brief

A firefight in the Kali Senami area of Dekai district saw the Indonesian Army seize seven firearms from suspected members of the Free Papua Movement. Troops, led by Brig. Gen. Riyanto, collected an arsenal of handguns, rifles and extra gear, which are now undergoing examination. While the operation is commended as a step toward public safety, details on the weapons’ types and the broader threat level remain undetermined.

The Indonesian military (TNI) seized seven firearms from suspected members of the Free Papua Movement (OPM) following a firefight in the Kali Senami area, Dekai District, Yahukimo Regency, Papua Pegunungan, on 7 November 2026, the army said. The confrontation occurred while a patrol team was conducting a routine drive through the region, and the crew encountered what was believed to be a temporary hideout of OPM fighters.

Brig. Gen. Riyanto, commander of TNI Habema operations, told the Jakarta‑based news agency ANTARA that the weapons were recovered after a brief exchange of gunfire. “Every firearm secured means a reduced potential threat to human safety,” Riyanto said. “Soldiers must remain firm, professional, and measured in carrying out their duties, while prioritizing the protection of the public.”

The seized arsenal included two handguns and five long‑barreled firearms, along with ammunition, sighting equipment, binoculars and other gear. Riyanto noted that the exact types and conditions of the weapons are still under identification. The pieces have been transported to the military headquarters for further inspection.

Officials say the operation is part of a broader effort to restrict the movement of the armed separatist group and to safeguard civilians in Papua. The army aims to ensure residents can carry out daily activities in peace and supports long‑term stability in the region. The seizure aligns with the military’s broader strategy to limit OPM’s operational capabilities and deter future clashes.

Remaining questions center on the classification and calibre of the confiscated weapons, the level of threat posed by OPM in the area, and how the seized gear will influence the pace of security operations moving forward. All aspects of the situation await the findings of the ongoing examination and further intelligence gathering.
