In brief

South Korea's exports hit a record $115.3bn in October, up 93.7% year‑over‑year, largely thanks to a 259% increase in semiconductor exports. The Bank of Korea noted the growth outpaced forecasts, but sources differ on the exact percentage rise, leaving questions about the long‑term trajectory of the export boom.

South Korea’s monthly export figure for October reached a record $115.3 billion, according to data released Thursday by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources and the Bank of Korea. The surge, driven mainly by a sharp rise in semiconductor shipments, thrust the country into its highest‑ever single‑month export level, well above previous records.

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Resources reported that countrywide exports climbed 93.7 percent year‑over‑year. Semiconductor exports comprised 56.4 billion U.S. dollars in the month, up 259 percent relative to October 2025, with memory chips accounting for roughly one‑third of that value. Other sectors, such as automotive parts and consumer electronics, also broadened the export mix, though their contribution was smaller than that of chips.

In contrast, a Bank of Korea statement published the same day noted that exports grew 18 percent from the previous year’s October, a figure that falls far short of the Ministry’s 93.7 percent increase. The central bank emphasized that the growth “outpaced every forecast” and that the country’s global supply‑chain position remains resilient, even amid ongoing worldwide supply‑chain tensions. The Bank’s figures therefore diverge sharply from the Ministry’s numbers, and the reason for this discrepancy has not yet been clarified.

Imports for October were $72.78 billion, up 36 percent year‑over‑year, according to the Ministry’s data. The trade surplus widened to $42.5 billion, reflecting the robust export performance. The steady rise in import volume, fueled by increased demand for high‑tech components and consumer goods, underscores a healthy trade environment but also highlights Korea’s reliance on imported materials for its manufacturing base.

Both the Ministry and the Bank of Korea pointed to the semiconductor industry’s pivotal role in sustaining Korea’s export momentum. Memory chip sales in particular accounted for a significant share of the export boom, mirroring global demand for advanced electronics. The data also reaffirmed South Korea’s status as a world‑leading semiconductor exporter, reinforcing confidence among international partners and investors.

Despite the impressive figures, analysts and policymakers still face uncertainties about the durability of the export surge. While the data reveal a record month, unresolved questions remain regarding the alignment of the Ministry’s 93.7‑percent growth figure with the Bank of Korea’s 18‑percent reading, the potential impact of fluctuating global demand, and the long‑term resilience of supply‑chain networks amid shifting geopolitical pressures. These uncertainties are already recognized by the outlets that reported the statistics, and no definitive answer has yet emerged.
