In brief

In an effort to alleviate growing tensions, Iran communicated to U.S. officials that it was not plotting to assassinate Donald J. Trump, aiming for a potential diplomatic thaw.

In October, Iran delivered a message to the Biden administration stating that it had no intention of harming Donald J. Trump, which appears to be part of a strategy to reduce escalating tensions, according to officials from both the U.S. and Iran. This communication was relayed through an intermediary and followed a stern warning from Washington in September indicating that any Iranian attempt on Trump's life would constitute “an act of war.” Since Trump's recent victory in the elections on November 5, various Iranian analysts, former officials, and media sources have been advocating for improved relations with the president-elect, despite promises from Trump's allies to intensify pressure on Tehran. U.S. officials allege that Iran had previously sought to kill Trump as retribution for his role in the drone strike that killed Major General Qassim Suleimani in 2020, an event that marked a significant escalation in U.S.-Iran relations. Moreover, the U.S. Department of Justice has announced two indictments believed to be linked to Iranian plots targeting Trump. These developments add to allegations that Iran was also involved in plans to assassinate other former officials from Trump's administration. The sensitive nature of these discussions has led officials to request anonymity to provide insight into the ongoing diplomatic communications.
