In brief

Russian military strikes on Black Sea ports aim to cripple Ukraine's economy and impact global food supply, escalating tensions in the region.

In recent days, Russian military activities have surged with focused strikes on Ukraine's Black Sea port infrastructure and civilian shipping. This appears to be a strategic move by Russia to inhibit Ukraine's grain exports, thereby harming the country's economy while also influencing global food prices. The assault is particularly centered on the city of Odesa and nearby coastal regions. Within the past week, five separate attacks have claimed the lives of 14 civilians and wounded 28 more, as reported by Ukraine's U.N. Human Rights Monitoring Mission. The most recent attack involved ballistic missiles hitting a residential building, resulting in four fatalities, including a teenage girl, with nine others injured. These strikes predominantly target ships from smaller countries, possibly to avoid international retaliation. Ships from Palau and Saint Kitts and Nevis have been damaged in the attacks. In response, Peter Stano, the European Commission's main external affairs spokesman, criticized Russia for using food supply as a weapon, condemning the actions as violations of international law and calling for their cessation.
