In brief

The Vatican’s Pope Leo XIV called for strengthened dialogue and peace, urging that humanitarian aid delivered to Oleshky, Ukraine, could foster lasting peace. He also highlighted the beatification of Pedro de Corpa, the Youth Olympic Games in Dakar, and announced a Mission with the Poor in Rome. While optimistic, he noted that how quickly these actions translate into concrete peace remains uncertain.

On November 1, 2026, Pope Leo XIV spoke to a crowd gathered in St. Peter’s Square after the Angelus prayer on the Solemnity of All Saints, according to a Prensa Latina report. He urged the faithful to strengthen dialogue and peace, citing recent humanitarian aid delivered to the Ukrainian town of Oleshky. The Vatican‑city pontiff framed the assistance as a hopeful step toward lasting peace, while reminding the crowd to entrust suffering peoples to the Virgin Mary, Queen of Peace, and the saints.

The humanitarian operations in Oleshky were carried out through a collaboration among several organizations, which the pope highlighted as a model of solidarity. He praised the joint effort that allowed aid to reach civilians in the war‑torn region. The assistance, which included food, medical supplies, and shelter provisions, represented a tangible expression of Catholic charity and of the Church's commitment to alleviating human suffering caused by armed conflict.

He further stressed that the humanitarian actions in Oleshky could become a catalyst for strengthening dialogue between the parties involved in the conflict. The pontiff suggested that such gestures of compassion might inspire additional endeavors toward concrete peace initiatives. He urged the faithful to continue praying for peace and to support the Church's efforts to bridge divides, emphasizing that dialogue remains a prerequisite for any lasting resolution.

The pope also drew attention to the beatification of Pedro de Corpa and four companions, a ceremony that took place in Savannah, Georgia, in the United States. The beatified individuals were members of the Order of Friars Minor killed in 1597. Leo XIV emphasized this milestone as a reminder of the Church's historical dedication to martyrdom and its continuing narrative of sacrifice for faith.

The Youth Olympic Games currently underway in Dakar, Senegal, from October 31 to November 13 were also mentioned by the pontiff. He noted that athletes between the ages of 15 and 18 compete in a range of sports, marking the first time the Olympic program is being held on the African continent. The pope’s remarks highlighted the significance of this sporting event as a platform for young people to experience international camaraderie.

In addition, Leo XIV highlighted the educational and cultural gatherings incorporated into the Youth Olympic Games. He praised the program for promoting Olympic values and fostering understanding among participants from diverse national backgrounds. The pontiff viewed sport as a sign of hope, stressing that the blending of competition and cultural exchange could help nurture future diplomatic and peaceful relations.

The pope also announced a Mission with the Poor that will be hosted in Rome from November 8 to 15. The initiative, promoted by the Friars Minor, focuses on placing vulnerable individuals at the center of the mission’s activities. Leo XIV described this project as an opportunity to extend the Church’s outreach to those in need and to reinforce the Catholic commitment to charity.

While the pope expressed optimism that the assistance to Oleshky and related goodwill gestures will foster dialogue, it remains uncertain how quickly and effectively these efforts will translate into tangible peace outcomes. Likewise, the broader effects of the ‘Mission with the Poor’ on Rome’s social service framework, and the impact of the Youth Olympic Games on long—term cross–cultural relations, have yet to be fully evaluated.
