In brief

Three days after a Brazilian woman fell hundreds of feet while hiking Mount Rinjani in Indonesia, rescue teams are preparing to deploy a helicopter equipped for a high-risk recovery operation.

A search and rescue team has been tirelessly working to locate Juliana Marins, a woman in her 20s, who disappeared after falling approximately 1,600 feet on Saturday. Marins was hiking with a group, including a guide, when the incident occurred on the renowned and active volcano, known for its breathtaking views and scenic beauty. Family members revealed the unfortunate news, indicating that she had not been reachable since the fall.On Tuesday, Indonesian authorities confirmed that drone footage had shown Marins as motionless at the crash site, heightening the urgency of the rescue efforts. Muhamad Hariyadi, the head of the search and rescue office in Mataram, announced that the team would use a helicopter with 2,000 meters of rope to attempt to retrieve her. He described the mission as “very risky,” given the difficult terrain of Mount Rinjani.Situated on the island of Lombok, east of Bali, Mount Rinjani rises 12,224 feet above sea level and is famed for its panoramic vistas and deep blue volcanic lake. Marins had excitedly shared her adventure with family and friends through social media before the accident occurred. In one of her videos, she expressed her eagerness for the spectacular views, which has resonated with her hiking peers who have since commented on the challenging conditions of the trek. Rescue teams hope to bring her home safely as families eagerly await news of her condition.
