In brief

A wave of overnight strikes hit Kyiv on Saturday, injuring nine civilians and damaging bridges and energy facilities. Ukrainian officials claim the strikes were launched by Russia, while Russian authorities point to Ukrainian attacks as the cause. Both sides blame the other for targeting civilian infrastructure amid heightened tensions before upcoming peace talks.

Late on Saturday, 7 November 2026, a series of overnight airstrikes struck Kyiv, leaving nine civilians injured and damaging infrastructure, according to Ukrainian officials. The attacks were reported by the State Emergency Service (DSNS) and confirmed by Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, who said the city’s energy supply was severely affected and that a bridge was damaged.

DSNS first reported that three people were injured, but later updated the figure to six, noting additional damage in the Darnytskyi and Sviatoshynskyi districts. The agency said the strikes damaged several residential buildings, a kindergarten, and a non‑residential building in the Solomianskyi district.

“The energy supply situation in the capital is extremely difficult, which has also affected the operation of the city’s heating and water supply systems. Energy workers and municipal crews are working to restore services for the city's residents,” Mayor Klitschko said, according to a statement released by the Kyiv city administration. He added that the Pivnichnyi Bridge was damaged and had been closed for traffic while specialists assessed the extent of the damage.

Earlier Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy posted on X that the overnight strikes had injured nine people and claimed Russia had used 172 drones and 36 ballistic missiles. He echoed accusations of an nabil blackout attempt, stating, “When Russia is trying to plunge Kyiv – a city of millions – and the entire country into a blackout, Ukraine must not….”

Conversely, Russian authorities declared that Ukrainian attacks had damaged residential infrastructure, warehouses, and production facilities in multiple regions, including the capital. They framed the event as a Ukrainian strike that targeted civilian infrastructure, a narrative that mirrors Kyiv’s version but reverses the causal attribution.

Kyiv’s Regional Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko confirmed that one person was killed in the broader region surrounding the capital after strikes reportedly hit five districts. He added that twelve other regions had also been attacked during the same window of time.

Both sides have warned that the attacks could further degrade essential services, with Ukrainian officials citing disruptions to heating and water, while Russian officials suggested that similar attacks could damage “essential infrastructure” in Ukraine.

The incident came just weeks before US‑mediated peace talks in Abu Dhabi, heightening concerns that the violence could derail diplomatic progress. Analysts note that both parties’ public statements focus on protecting civilians while simultaneously accusing the other of indiscriminate targeting.

While the number of casualties and the exact scope of the damaged infrastructure are clearly stated by each side’s official sources, unverified reports from independent observers are lacking. Both Russia and Ukraine have denied responsibility for the attacks and have presented alternative narratives that attribute the damage to the other side. The international community has not yet provided independent verification of the claims, leaving the precise responsibility and scale of the strikes unresolved.
