In brief

At least 56 individuals have tragically lost their lives as torrential rain wreaked havoc in the town of Mokwa, situated southwest of Nigeria's capital, Abuja. Local officials reported the extensive nature of the flooding caught them off guard, despite the knowledge that the rainy season was underway. The heavy rainfall occurred overnight, leaving residents waking to a scene of devastation—homes and businesses flattened, families displaced, and bodies drifting in the floodwaters. Witness reports, such as that of local shopkeeper Umar Jamil, reflect the urgency and chaos as they attempted rescue operations amidst the rising water.

Spokesman Habibu Wushishi of Niger State's Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs stated that rescue efforts are ongoing, with hopes the death toll may rise as search operations continue. As the rainy season brings expected flooding, climate change has also been cited as a factor in the increasing intensity of such disasters in recent years. Although flooding warnings were issued, local residents, like Mr. Jamil, expressed frustration over the delayed response from authorities, highlighting ongoing concerns regarding preparedness for future disasters.
