In brief

Jeffrey Gettleman shares his immersive experience of ice fishing and jogging in Nuuk amidst heated discussions about U.S. interests in Greenland.

In mid-January, as I sped towards a pristine ice fjord in Greenland—where the temperature hovered around five degrees—my snowmobile cut through the icy air at a swift 30 miles per hour. The darkness of the arctic sky, even at 11 a.m., hinted at the stark reality of winter in the Arctic Circle. Accompanying a local Greenlandic family on their way to a popular fishing spot, my nearly two-week reporting journey in this enchanting but cold wilderness had just begun.Greenland, an island often depicted with images of towering icebergs, is currently in the spotlight due to former President Donald Trump's controversial interest in the region. His remarks about the U.S. potentially acquiring Greenland for its extensive landmass, strategic location, and rich mineral resources sparked widespread concern among the Greenlandic populace. My travels commenced in Nuuk, the capital city, where I engaged with both political figures and everyday citizens to gauge their reactions to Trump's ambitions. The consensus was clear: the residents were largely against the idea. Following a long day of interviews, I decided to venture out for a jog through Nuuk, which was enshrouded in a gentle snowfall. The icy streets were a challenge, but as I ran, I encountered a group of enthusiastic joggers. Trying to blend in, I made a deceptive U-turn only to be approached by a friendly Danish runner asking me, "Who are you?" This moment encapsulated the connection and camaraderie that often arises in an environment as breathtaking yet rugged as Greenland. Through these experiences, I gained a deeper appreciation for the unique blend of culture, environment, and political tension that defines this remarkable land.
