In brief

Eoghan Daltun, a sculptor turned conservationist, is championing a movement to rewild Ireland's landscapes, addressing decades of ecological neglect.

Eoghan Daltun, a sculptor residing in the picturesque West Cork region of Ireland, has taken on the ambitious task of transforming his land into a lush temperate rainforest. Contrary to popular belief, Daltun asserts that the moniker "Emerald Isle" masks a stark ecological reality. In a recent conversation, he pointed out that many assume the abundant rainfall denotes a thriving natural environment, yet the facts paint a different picture. The Environmental Protection Agency of Ireland recently reported concerning findings regarding the state of the country’s ecology. Thousands of years ago, 80% of Ireland was forested, but now trees only cover a mere 11% of the land, with native species symbolically reduced to just 1%. The majority of these trees are nonnative Sitka spruce, contributing to a decline in biodiversity that has left the land resembling biological deserts.Daltun emphasizes that while many might blame historical colonialism for these ecological failures, the reality is that independence has not translated to an improvement in environmental conditions. "It’s a comfort to do so," he said, "but we must confront our current shortcomings."To raise awareness and inspire change, Daltun documented his rewilding journey in his 2022 publication, "An Irish Atlantic Rainforest," and has recently released another inspiring work, "The Magic of an Irish Rainforest." Both focus on the natural beauty and pressing need for conservation of Ireland's rare ecosystems. His efforts are not just about personal reclamation but also serve as a clarion call for others to join the movement towards ecological restoration in Ireland.
