In the northern West Bank village of Tal, a violent shooting has left four Palestinians and two Israelis dead— the deadliest incident there in months. The Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) say soldiers began firing after a security guard’s weapon was seized and used against them. Palestinian reports claim residents confronted an estimated 30 settlers who attacked their homes; Israeli soldiers arrived in the midst of a hand‑to‑hand clash, escalating to gunfire.
The Israeli army later confirmed a 27‑year‑old soldier was killed during the confrontation. Both Israeli and Palestinian security services reported that additional Palestinians were wounded, while the Israeli ambulance service said two Israeli civilians were injured.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu called an emergency security meeting, vowed to use “full force” against those responsible, and ordered reinforcements to the area near the settlement of Havat Gilad. He described the attack as part of a broader surge in settler violence that began following the Gaza war’s outbreak on 7 October 2023.
The Palestinian foreign ministry denounced the killings as a “massacre” and accused the Israeli government of enabling settler terrorism with impunity. It blamed the escalation on Israeli policy and the unchecked presence of settlements, noting that approximately 160 Israeli settlements house 700,000 Jews in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
Overall, earlier reports indicate more than 1,100 Palestinians have been killed in the West Bank since the Gaza conflict began, with 35 of those deaths involving settler attacks. The UN notes 41 Israelis—including civilians and security personnel—have died either by Palestinian attacks or during Israeli military operations in the area.
The incident has intensified the already volatile situation in the West Bank, where clashes between settlers and Palestinian residents frequently occur amid Israeli military patrols and settlement expansions considered illegal under international law.
