In brief
The United Arab Emirates has arrested three Uzbek men connected to the kidnapping and murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan. Israeli officials label the incident as a dangerous act of antisemitic terrorism, raising concerns for the local Jewish community.
The United Arab Emirates has stepped up its efforts to address security concerns following the detention of three Uzbek nationals allegedly involved in the kidnapping and murder of Rabbi Zvi Kogan, an Israeli-Moldovan religious leader. This incident has sent shockwaves through the small Jewish community in the U.A.E. Officials from the interior ministry confirmed the arrests on Monday and revealed the suspects' identities: Olimboy Tohirovich, Makhmudjon Abdurakhim, both 28, and 33-year-old Azizbek Kamilovich, with images of them unveiled to the public.Rabbi Kogan, 28, was reported missing last Thursday when he was last seen in Dubai, the bustling heart of the nation. His car was discovered abandoned in Al Ain, bordering Abu Dhabi, before his lifeless body was located on Sunday. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu condemned the crime as a “despicable antisemitic terror act.”Kogan, who was active within the Chabad-Lubavitch movement and helped operate a kosher grocery store in Dubai, was well-recognized within his community. His presence became more pronounced following the normalization of relations between Israel and the U.A.E. in 2020 through the Abraham Accords, which has encouraged many Israelis to settle in the Gulf region. The U.A.E. has otherwise prided itself on being a bastion of tolerance, having opened its first synagogue in decades in early 2023 as part of an interfaith initiative.Yousef al-Otaiba, the Emirati ambassador to the United States, characterized the attack as “a crime against the U.A.E.,” emphasizing the nation’s commitment to protecting all religions. As the investigation unfolds, Israeli officials expressed hope for a swift forensic examination of the rabbi’s remains to facilitate his return for burial in Jerusalem. As the U.A.E. grapples with this tragic event, questions loom regarding the security of its Jewish population amid calls for greater vigilance against potential antisemitic threats.
