Lovely Professional University (LPU), a 600‑acre campus in Punjab, has halted classes for 10 days after an unverified rape claim sparked violence and protests.
Police have registered a First Information Report against an unidentified suspect, while investigators comb through CCTV footage and student complaints. The campus, which hosts over 10,000 students from India and abroad, was rocked by arson, vandalism, traffic blockades and clashes with police during the unrest.
The incident began when a rumor in student WhatsApp groups alleged a female student was raped in a hostel on 23 September. No victim or perpetrator has surfaced, and CCTV footage to date shows no visitors entering the premises.
Students, frustrated by the campus’s delayed response, occupied dormitories with improvised weapons and splashed graffiti. Some claimed outsiders – masked men or employees – joined the demonstrators, while others said police had been involved.
University officials, led by pro‑chancellor Rashmi Mittal, released a video of three women denying any assault, then later admitted the footage might have been edited. Meanwhile, the Punjab State Women’s Commission has requested details of the FIR and safety measures.
What the Authorities Are Doing
Police have opened an FIR and appointed a seven‑member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to review CCTV footage and interview witnesses. The SIT’s preliminary search looked at likely spots but has yet to find a clear suspect.
The campus remains heavily policed, and students who remain are cautioned to stay in their rooms. Many have returned home after consulting with parents, and exam schedules have been postponed.
Future Outlook
Investigation will address two key questions: was any assault committed, and were outside groups responsible for the violence? In the meantime, LPU is working to reassure students, while lawmakers and the women's commission monitor the situation.
